The work carried out at the Cerro de la Defensa de Uclés, in Cuenca, by three lecturers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) has resulted in the discovery of an Almoravid site from the 11th and 12th centuries in astonishing condition. It is a finding of extraordinary interest.
The Fernando Nuñez Foundation, which is contributing to the funding of this project, has reported that it may be a fortified military camp, which may have later become a neighbourhood where the Almoravids separated from the Andalusian population of Uclés. It stretches over approximately nine hectares to the west of the current town and would date from between the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th. It is practically intact, which is a milestone for research into this period.
The Fernando Núñez Foundation, created in 2020 by the entrepreneur and promoter Fernando Nuñez Rebolo, aims to encourage the transmission of knowledge and the conservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the town and the Monastery of Uclés, former headquarters of the Order of Santiago. It also aims to promote rural development and the sustainability of the environment.
